The government has announced a fresh hike in fuel prices across the country. The price of diesel has been raised from Tk 115 to Tk 135 per liter, while petrol will now cost Tk 160 per liter and octane Tk 165 per liter.
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources on Sunday night, the new rates will take effect from 12:00 AM tonight.
The ministry stated that although international oil prices have surged sharply in recent months, domestic prices had remained unchanged for the past five months. Neighboring countries currently sell fuel at significantly higher rates compared to Bangladesh.
The price of kerosene has also been increased from Tk 135 to Tk 155 per liter. Petrol has gone up from Tk 140 to Tk 160, and octane from Tk 145 to Tk 165.
Officials explained that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has driven global oil prices and freight charges upward since March. Despite international prices more than doubling, the government refrained from raising domestic rates until now. As a result, Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) incurred losses amounting to Tk 22,875 crore between March and August.
